Empirical fitting of hybrid lenses can bring increased efficiency to your practice by saving valuable chair time, streamlining the fitting process, reducing reliance on reusable fit sets (with the associated maintenance that they require), and eliminating physical application of trial lenses on patients.  Empirical fitting removes the need to disinfect and reuse a diagnostic lens and replaces it with a technology-driven, custom design.  SynergEyes has developed a proprietary algorithm that determines the custom lens to manufacture for each patient, using accurate patient measurements.

How to Empirically Prescribe UltraHealth

Hybrid Contact Lenses

Hybrid contact lens options that can be prescribed empirically for patients with keratoconus include SynergEyes KC and UltraHealth. 

UltraHealth lenses are the most advanced hybrid lens.  While indicated for keratoconus, the 'Continuum of Care' sweetspot is for patients with mild to moderate keratoconus.  UltraHealth is designed to vault the corneal ectasia, providing well-centered, gas permeable vision along with comfort from the soft skirt.

To Place an Empirical Order:

Provide a topography (PDF or raw data) with the following information to a SynergEyes Technical Consultant:

  1. Keratometry readings
  2. Eccentricity data, often listed as e, e2, CEI,
    Shape Factor, or Q value
  3. HVID
  4. For power, provide previous RGP or scleral data with
    base curve and over-refraction.

Using the data listed above, a recommended lens will be ordered.

How to Empirically Prescribe Duette

Duette and Duette Progressive

Duette hybrid lenses are ideal for patients with astigmatism or presbyopia. The hybrid design eliminates rotation issues experienced with soft toric lenses, while providing stable centration for excellent visual acuity. Duette Progressive Center Distance and Center Near designs enable optimal presbyopic vision correction customization.

Fitting Duette is straightforward. Lenses may be fit empirically without the need for diagnostic sets or fluorescein. Provide Ks, Rx and HVID, with add power and pupil size, to create the initial lens. The Duette Empirical Calculator can be used to help select the initial lens.

Empirical Fitting Poster Presented at the Global Specialty Lens Symposium 2020

Contact lens fitting of the irregular cornea can be challenging due to the corneal anatomy and integrity, but also due to resources available to the clinician in terms of chair time, trial fitting sets and technology.  The new ISO standards also present disruptions in clinical practice that will require more rigorous techniques to stay in compliance.

This case series demonstrates how hybrids can be designed utilizing software to create a 3D model of the eye and a simulated fluorescein pattern that will result in various lens designs and sagittal vaults, demonstrating that various hybrid lens designs can be fit empirically with much success and efficiency.
